Jenny and Roy met at work, but had very little daily interaction. Over time Roy began to manufacture ways to cross paths with Jenny. Eventually a workplace infatuation and flirtation escalated into a full fledged romance.
Their first date was at the Walt Disney Music Hall to see and hear the Los Angeles Philharmonic perform Maurice Ravel's Boléro. It is an orchestral piece of music that famously starts small, quiet, and modest, but over a lengthy period of time builds into a massive cacophonous symphony of sound. This is a piece of music that captures the essence of their relationship.
Once Roy knew Jenny was the one, he began concocting a plan for the perfect engagement. It involved a fair amount of deception and cunning, but it worked out beautifully in the end.
Jenny's most favorite place in the whole world is a small private beach in Glen Arbor, Michigan. She makes the pilgrimage at least once a year, and last year Roy was lucky enough to see it for himself. He knew this place was special to Jenny, and could see why. In the Spring of 2015 Jenny began planning her trip to Glen Arbor with the hopes that Roy would once again join her. It was then, that Roy decided to deceive Jenny (and all of her close friends as well).
Roy toyed with the idea of saying he couldn't make it for "work reasons" but that would be a difficult lie to keep up. He eventually landed on a story that would be quite believable. Roy's younger brother Tommy had yet to visit Los Angeles, and has been considering the trip for some time. Roy told Jenny that it would be the perfect time for Tommy to come visit while she was with her family in Michigan. The trap had been set.
Jenny's family, however was not deceived. Once Roy decided on the course of action he made the nervous phone call to her parents to inform them of his intentions. Together they planned how Roy would fly out to Michigan a day after Jenny, and surprise her on that beautiful beach.
The universe decided to put a few obstacles in the way leading up to the moment of the engagement though. A month before hand, on an amazing trip to Las Vegas, the happy couple was involved in a minor fender bender. The pair would leave Las Vegas the following day, but the car would not leave Las Vegas for another 28 days. Mother nature also threw a curveball and unleashed the most devastating torrent of wind and rain that Glen Arbor has seen in over 100 years. The storm ravaged the small town, tearing up trees, downing power lines and causing enough water damage to close the very place they were intending to stay at for the week.
Roy got the news that Jenny's most favorite place was essentially "closed". With less than a day before the engagement, stress levels reached all time highs, as they also did for Jenny's parents. But in the end, nothing was going to stop this from happening, and with some improvisation and some helpful and understanding people, Jenny's parents saw to it that she'd still be on the beach with her head buried in her latest book when Roy arrived to pop the question.
And that's exactly what happened.
